  • Small companies - $8,581 per hour downtime.
  • Medium companies - $215,638 per hour downtime.
  • Large enterprises - $686,250 per hour of downtime.Data_Loss_Stats

The numbers speak for themselves: you need to plan for downtime!

What causes downtime?

As it turns out, businesses should be more wary of their own employees than of natural disasters. Although hurricanes, tornadoes, and the like do their fair share of damage, research shows that natural disasters account for just 10 percent of downtime. The leading culprits? human error, at 58 percent.

If you’ve been putting protecting your data off because you consider yourself in a safe zone, you need to understand that it’s far more likely that data loss occurred due to human errors than anything Mother Nature could throw at you..

What’s at Stake?

Two-and-a-half quintillion bytes of data are generated daily. And 90 percent of the
total data in existence was created within the last two years.  Yet

  • Nearly 75 percent of SMBs possess no disaster recovery plan
  • 25 percent are “extremely confident” that they can restore data in the case of a data loss event
  • 50 percent of SMBs back up less than 60 percent of their data. The remaining 40 percent? No protection for it whatsoever

Thirty-five percent of SMBs lost as much as $500,000 over the past three years due to downtime. Five percent lost up to $1 million. And 3 percent lost more than $1 million

What are SMBs doing to protect themselves?

Datto's Intelligent Business Continuity (IBC)

Designed for small businesses, Datto's Intelligent Business Continuity (IBC) solution is an advanced backup, disaster recovery and business continuity solution that is easy to use, cost effective, and provides an insurance policy against costly downtime and significantly decreases the likelihood of any extended interruptions in business continuity.

  • The entire system is backed up seamlessly through image based backup
  • Downtime is reduced and employees can work without any special connections or software through leading edge hybrid virtualization
  • Backups are automatically verified daily through screenshot backup verification
  • Breakthrough bare metal restore technology allows users to perform restores to dissimilar hardware
  • Inverse chain technology creates an optimal backup chain from scratch and restores and virtualizes every point
  • An easy to use and intuitive interface reduces time to install and maintain

Image-based Backup

This feature is the backbone of the system and adds significant usability in disaster scenarios. With image-based backup the user no longer has to pick and choose what files are backed up or worry about saving the most recent draft to the shared/backup folder. Rather the entire system is backed up seamlessly, unknown to the user at granular intervals.

Hybrid Virtualization

This feature is the combination of instant off-site virtualization and the single click connectivity of instant local virtualization. A failed system can be spun up easily from the Alto interface dramatically reducing downtime. Automatic VPN technology seamlessly connects the virtualization from the user’s local network to Datto’s secure offsite servers. In the event of a local disaster, entire networks can be recreated virtually and connected directly to the cloud.

Screenshot Backup Verification

Datto ALTO includes Datto’s automated virtualization testing software. Screenshot takes the hassle and worry out of checking backups. Once a day Datto ALTO will take a backup and virtualize it locally, not attached to the network. Once running it will snap an image of the login screen then check that image to make sure it is valid. After the image is checked it will be prepared in an email and sent out as an alert.

Easy to Use Interface

From set-up configuration to restore, the Datto ALTO is both intuitive and easy to use which allows MSP’s the option to let their clients manage the backup system all on their own. This saves time and overhead to allow MSP’s to focus on implementations and less on configurations.

Bare Metal Restore

Datto ALTO includes brand new BMR technology from Datto. This breakthrough
technology allows users to perform bare metal restores to dissimilar hardware over the
client’s network reliably and securely. Starting from an imaged USB thumb drive the
user will follow an intuitive GUI from selecting machines to automatic partitioning. The
process cuts down restore time dramatically while also improving the advanced options
for users looking to customize their new machine.

Inverse Chain TechnologyTM

This feature is leading edge because of its functionality and efficiency. Datto’s Inverse
Chain Technology creates an optimal backup chain from scratch, and restores and
virtualizes every point. In addition you can change retention dynamically with the size of
the device without having to reset or reseed. Inverse chain technology saves the backups
in VMDK format, which means you can export backups and play them on a hypervisor, or
transport the VM and leverage your existing VM environment.

Affordability and Scalability

Datto ALTO is priced for the small business with a range of price points based on the
specific business’ requirements without losing any of the robust functionality. Datto ALTO
is scalable with the additional option of the larger Datto SIRIS solution which can meet the
needs of medium and larger sized businesses

Traditional Data backup vs. Intelligent Business Continuity: What’s The Difference?

Thinking about data backup is a good first step. But in case of failure, you have to get that data back and restore it quickly enough so your business doesn’t suffer. In fact, leading edge business owners are finding them unacceptable, due to their inability to recover data quickly and mitigate downtime. Technological innovations have established a comprehensive new standard, Intelligent Business Continuity (IBC). Only an IBC solution will ensure data protection, data security, instant recovery, mitigate downtime and ensure continuity.

Traditional Data Backup Intelligent Business Continuity
Can take weeks to recover data after a disaster occurs, if the data is recoverable Downtime after a disaster is reduced to hours, minutes, or even seconds
High risk of failure due to heavy manual administration: 58% of
downtime is due to human error
Fully automated backup process—very little manual management required
Difficult to test if a backup is working properly  Automated screenshots are taken of each image-based backup, to verify a successful backup
Time consuming and expensive to make a copy of, and store, backups in multiple locations. 61% of SMBs still ship tapes to an off-site location  Each image-based backup is automatically saved in multiple locations for redundancy; local appliance and secure data centers
Backup speeds are slower  Quick and efficient transfer of files to off-site data centers, even
with low bandwidth or busy networks
Difficult to prioritize important data, files and applications  Critical data can be prioritized, to be transferred offsite first
Physical to virtual conversions can be time consuming and have a high failure rate  Instant virtualization in mere seconds, due to both proprietary technology and already saved VMDKs
Data and backups are at risk when based in only one location, either local OR in the cloud  Avoid risk of downtime from a local disaster, as backups are stored
in both local device AND secure cloud
Limited options for encrypting data, may not pass industry regulations (i.e., HIPAA, SOX)  AES 256 and SSL key-based encryption ensures data is safe both at rest and in transit, to meet industry regulations (ie. HIPAA, SOX)
Tape failure rates can exceed 50%  Minimal risk of corrupted backups or data loss
Potential for theft of loss of media  Off-site backups stored in SSAE16 Type II data centers, ensuring

What To Look for in a Business Continuity

  • Hybrid cloud backup—As discussed above, taking a hybrid approach fixes the vulnerabilities that a cloud-only or local-only possess.
  • Image-based backup—Make sure that the backup solution takes images of all your data and systems, and doesn’t simply copy the files alone.
  • Instant local and off-site virtualization.
  • Screenshot backup verification. What good is a backup if it’s not working? Demand proof.
  • Images saved as virtualized copy (ex: as VMDK files) for faster recovery time
